Tourism Development Achievements over the Last Decade at Budapest’s World Heritage Sites, Part III

The last major renovation of the Matthias Church, a World Heritage Site in Budapest, was completed in 2013. The altar was consecrated at that time which was of great importance to the local community. The church tower was opened in 2016, and the observation deck and panoramic terrace were made available to the public. In this way, visiting the church and the tower offers a unique experience for visitors. The restoration that preceded this was carried out in the late 1960s and 1970s. Since then, the building stones and decorative elements have begun to loosen, so maintenance of the church requires ongoing work. The church offers visitors a variety of services, including a church tour, a tower tour, and museum education activities for children. In 2018-2019, when tourism in the Buda Castle District peaked, a tablet app was planned to be launched in the church. After the pandemic period this system was never realized. However, discussions began with the heritage protection office and the municipality to replace the many information panels with digital displays. Although they contain necessary information, these panels detract from the visitor’s visual experience. Church concerts were suspended during the pandemic. After the pandemic, a new cantor-choirmaster started to organize concerts again.  However, to revitalize the concert series, visitors need to be able to buy tickets online. Therefore, all elements of the website and marketing communications need to be in place, and contracts with ticketing companies need to be more transparent than before. These plans will be fully implemented over the next 5 years. As part of the process, a new website was created at the end of 2023. On an experimental basis a visual display system used to project hymn lyrics – based on artificial intelligence – was also created in the church.

In the 5th District the world heritage area and areas expected to be world heritage areas are being continuously developed and renovated in order to make them worthy of the world heritage designation. Thanks to the City of the Future development program (Jövő Városa fejlesztési program), the district has been developing steadily for more than 10 years. There is both public and, as a result, private investment in the area, which adds to the attractiveness of the World Heritage Site. Private investments have resulted in a number of hotel developments to meet tourism needs. The renewal of representative public spaces such as Vörösmarty Square, József Nádor Square, Podmaniczky Square, Servita Square and the smaller streets of the Southern Downtown, as well as the development of the Bastion Park, have all played a major role in shaping the quality of the World Heritage area. This renewal is also seen in the strengthening of tourist attractions and services. In addition the World Heritage Site area also offer tourists beautiful views of the visual and architectural features of the existing buildings. The district municipality has also supported the facade renovations of apartment buildings in this area.

A budapesti világörökségi helyszínekhez tartozó Mátyás-templomban a legutolsó nagyobb felújítás 2013-ban fejeződött be. Ekkor szentelték fel az oltárt, ami a helyi közösség számára nagy jelentőséggel bír. 2016-ban nyílt meg a templomtorony, elérhetővé tették a kilátót és a panorámateraszt. Ezáltal a templom és a torony megtekintése élmény-együttest kínál a látogatóknak. Az ezt megelőző restauráció az 1960-as és az 1970-es évek végén történt. Azóta elkezdtek meglazulni az építőkövek és a díszítőelemek, a templom karbantartása tehát folyamatos munkát kíván. A templom a látogatóknak többféle szolgáltatást nyújt, így templomtúrán, toronytúrán, múzeumpedagógiai foglalkozásokon vehetnek részt. 2018–2019-ben, amikor tetőzött a budavári turizmus, tervezték egy tablet segítségével használható applikáció elindítását a templomban. Ez a rendszer azonban a pandémia időszaka után nem volt megvalósítható. Másrészt az örökségvédelmi hivatallal és az önkormányzattal egyeztetéseket kezdtek arról, hogy digitális kijelzőkkel helyettesíthessék az információs táblák sokaságát. Ezek a táblák ugyanis – bár kötelezően kihelyezendő információkat tartalmaznak –, vizuálisan nem segítik az élménynyújtást. A pandémia időszaka alatt szüneteltek a templomi koncertek. A járványidőszak után új kántor-karnagy kezdte el ezeket szervezni. A koncertsorozat újjáélesztéséhez azonban szükséges az, hogy a látogatók online is tudjanak jegyet vásárolni, megfelelő legyen a honlap és a marketingkommunikáció minden eleme, valamint az eddigieknél átláthatóbb módon köttessenek meg a szerződések a jegyárusító cégekkel. Ezeket a terveket a következő 5 évben valósítják meg teljeskörűen. A folyamat részeként 2023 végére új honlapot készítettek. A templomban – kísérleti jelleggel – kialakítottak egy mesterséges intelligencián alapuló kivetítő-rendszert is. 

Az V. kerületet érintő világörökségi terület és világörökség várományos területek folyamatos fejlesztése és a világörökségi ranghoz méltó megújítása is zajlik. A Jövő Városa fejlesztési programnak köszönhetően a kerület több mint 10 éve folyamatosan fejlődik. A területen egyaránt megjelennek a közfinanszírozású és – ennek hatására – a magánerős beruházások, amelyek a világörökségi terület vonzerejét növelik. A magánberuházások során számos, a turisztikai igények kielégítésére szolgáló szállodakialakítás valósult meg. Az olyan reprezentatív közterek megújítása, mint a Vörösmarty tér, a József nádor tér, a Podmaniczky tér, a Szervita tér és a Déli Belváros kisebb utcái, illetve a Bástya park kialakítása együttesen a világörökségi terület minőségi alakításában nagy szerepet játszottak. Ez a turisztikai vonzerőt és a turisztikai igényeket kiszolgáló funkciók erősítésében is megjelent. A világörökségi helyszín turisztikai kínálata ezen kívül magában foglalja a meglévő épületek látványát és architektúráját. Ez a társasházaknak a kerületi önkormányzat által is támogatott homlokzat-felújításaiban is megjelenik.
